Chapter Thirteen

“I let you win, you know,” Jim joked as he passed CJ, giving him a playful nudge on the shoulder as he went around him to the driver’s side.

“Sure you did. Uh-huh. Keep believing that if it makes you feel better.” CJ threw a grin over the top of the car before ducking down to climb in.

Jim tried not to groan as he bent to fit behind the wheel. He was going to be sore tomorrow. He kept in shape, but the basketball game had been pretty physical and he had more than twenty-five years on CJ. It had taken a bit of maneuvering to hide the injury he’d received yesterday. He was embarrassed that he hadn’t been able to jump out of the way in time—especially since he knew a car was going to sideswipe the disabled vehicle. Besides, he had taken some pain relievers earlier and he’d hoped the exercise had loosened up the tight muscles. He couldn’t decide if it had or not.

“Take some ibuprofen tonight. That will help.”

“I’m fine.” Damn, it sucked to get old. Jim noted the time. It was just about five and Mark should be finishing up with the tests soon. “How about I take you back to your car and I can follow you back to your place to drop it off?”

“Sure. And we can lug all those books up to my apartment.”

After retrieving CJ’s car and Jim followed him back, another thirty minutes had passed. His son’s apartment was surprisingly clean and Jim commented on it.

“Yeah, well, it’s a lot easier to find my shit—stuff when it’s not all over the place. My roommate in my old apartment was a complete slob. I had to get out of there.” CJ unloaded the armload of books on the tiny kitchen table, and Jim put the remaining books he held beside them. CJ brushed his hands off on his jeans and said, “Come on. I’ll give you the grand tour.” A mixture of pride and embarrassment fought for supremacy on his face. Pride won out.

The apartment would have been described by a realtor as cozy. A galley kitchen, small eating area, a living room that was furnished with what appeared to be thrift store furniture and a bedroom with just enough room for a bed and chest of drawers and of course, a bathroom. Jim shrugged. “It has everything you need. And it’s bigger than my first apartment.”

“Yeah. I like it.”

Jim tilted his head towards the door. “We should get a move on. I’m pretty sure Mark’s done by now and I left my phone in the car.”

In the car, Jim checked his cell and was surprised there wasn’t a missed call from Mark. He tried calling Mark’s phone, but it immediately went to voicemail. Puzzled, Jim stared at the screen to make sure he had dialed the right number. He had. That was strange. “Hmmm…I thought Mark would have called by now and he’s not picking up. I guess we just head over and he’ll probably be done by the time we get there.
